The End of Machine Vision? The terms machine vision, computer vision or embedded vision describe increasingly similar products and solutions, all of which rely on image processing and are now used in both industrial and non-industrial areas. I have already suggested at this point that in the future we should simply talk about vision technologies. Companies such as Basler or Phytec, who simply talk about image processing or embedded imaging, ultimately concentrate on what is important: the image.

Vision China Shanghai Postponed

Frank Paul Nonnenmann (l.) replaced Michael Unger as Managing Director at Balluff on 1 February 2020. After more than 28 years with the company and 20 years as Managing Director, Unger joins the Advisory Board of the Neuhaus-based family business. Generation Change at Physik Instrumente

Physik Instrumente in Karlsruhe has implemented a quiet and long-planned generational change in its management. After 42 years as managing director, Dr. Karl Spanner has handed over the management of the company to his son, Markus Spanner (pictured). Spanner has held managerial responsibility as Managing Director Finance & Controlling at PI over the last 11 years. IDS Continues to Grow in 2019

In 2019, IDS Imaging Development Systems was able to achieve a sales increase in the higher single-digit percentage range. The company is targeting double-digit growth for 2020. The current positive order situation, with a 16% increase over the previous year, and the strong development of foreign business are reasons for this. Last year's sales increase was particularly strong in North America. In addition, the delivery of the 1.5 millionth IDS camera is expected in the second quarter of 2020.

Hexagon 2019 Financial Results

The Hexagon Industrial Enterprise Solutions division, which includes metrology systems, reported net sales of €544.0m. Using fixed exchange rates and a comparable group structure net sales decreased by -4%. The Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence division recorded -8% organic growth, largely driven by a significant decline in China and weak demand in automotive which offset continued good growth in aerospace.

Cooperation EVK and OP Teknik

The Austrian image processing developer EVK and the system integrator OP Teknik from Sweden have jointly developed a solution for robot-based sorting of construction and demolition waste. By combining EVK's hyperspectral imaging technology with a deep learning approach and OP Teknik's robot technology, the two companies developed the flexible Selma system for high material throughput and accurate sorting of selected fractions in construction and demolition waste. The system is characterized by its ability to accurately distinguish many heterogeneous materials such as paper, cardboard, wood or even light bulbs.

Labelbox Collects Million for AI Model Training

Labelbox today announced the completion of a million Series B round to expand the platform that helps customers label the data they need to train AI systems. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Google's AI-focused Gradient Ventures fund, Kleiner Perkins and First Round Capital. The funds will be used to develop and accelerate Labelbox's roadmap for machine learning and computer vision models by doubling the size of its engineering and sales teams.

Startup Scaled Robotics Raises €2M Seed Round

Barcelona-based start-up company Scaled Robotics has made a €2 million start-up investment led by European companies such as Norwegian Construct Venture and PropTech Fund Surplus. The financing follows a pre-founding investment of 1Mio.€. The company is developing a robot to be used on construction sites. Lasers and cameras are mounted at the top, which essentially create a 3D point map of a room using SLAM technology. The map is then compared with a construction model of the room, and differences can be noted with centimetre accuracy.
