The Valley of AI Tears The possibilities offered by artificial intelligence (AI) for the machine vision industry are very large. New approaches for applications, that were previously impossible (or very difficult) to solve have aroused the interest of users. However, it has also been shown that the problems caused by a lack of specialist knowledge and the time required to train algorithms, for example, slow down the rapid success of Deep Learning. Often a thousand required images become ten thousand at once and who should label them is not always clear. In addition, there are various architectures and technologies, where it is not clear which will ultimately prevail. In principle, it is the same as with any new technology: after high expectations at the beginning, you first pass through a valley of tears before the new technology is really user-suitable.

Kind regards
Dr.-Ing. Peter Ebert, Chief Editor inVISION
