Virtual inspections
KIT and BAM are currently investigating virtual test images and sensor-realistic image simulations, as science puts it. But what is behind it? In principle, the aim is to generate realistic images from machine vision or CT inspections on the computer, which are then used for various purposes. Firstly, to test the corresponding inspection systems with virtual images before production starts. In addition, the simulations are ideal for creating training data for deep learning algorithms if, for example, the user does not have enough images with corresponding errors.

VDMA expects production to decline again in 2020
The mechanical engineering industry in Germany must continue to prepare for the strains. The trade dispute between the USA and China and growing global protectionism are not without consequences for the German mechanical engineering industry. Other factors include the weak economy, Brexit and structural change in key customer groups. For this reason, the VDMA expects real production in the mechanical engineering sector to fall by -2% in 2020 - just as it does this year.

Intelligent adhesive application
A fully automated and controlled adhesive application system with 3D image processing is the result of a funding project by Nimak, Quiss and Fraunhofer IFAM. The new dosing systems a.tronNext now detect the respective position of the component during the bonding and sealing of structural elements and automatically apply the assembly and adhesive to the intended position. The application path is monitored by the camera, which sends signals to the dosing controller via an interface. The sensors also check the applied quantity and transmit this data to the control unit.
