Vision from the App Store Machine vision must be even more intuitive in the future. The usability of the systems can be simplified in two ways. On the one hand, by making it possible to operate different devices, such as (vision) sensors and 2D/3D vision systems, with a single software. The user only has to learn how to operate one software and not a new one for each device. Companies such as wenglor or Balluff already have this approach. The alternative - similar to a smartphone - is to develop a completely individual app for every possible application. If my application changes, I simply download the next app from a kind of vision app store onto my vision system. This procedure is already offered by Sick or ifm electronic in some cases.

Kind regards
Dr.-Ing. Peter Ebert, Chief Editor inVISION

Umati as Leading Brand for OPC UA

In the future, VDMA and VDW will jointly promote the use and dissemination of OPC UA standards for mechanical engineering under the Umati brand. The VDW has already launched the Umati (universal machine tool interface) brand in 2018. In the meantime, numerous other OPC UA Companion Specifications have been developed within the VDMA. In order to give them more visibility, Umati will be extended to the entire mechanical and plant engineering industry as a community for the use and marketing of OPC UA Companion Specifications. The basis is the actual OPC UA interface standardization. The VDMA is currently working on the basic OPC UA for Machinery Companion Specification, which is to be published later this year.

Incoming Orders in Mechanical Engineering

According to the VDMA, incoming orders in the German mechanical engineering industry in February fell short of the previous year's level by 4% in real terms. While orders from domestic customers fell by 6%, orders from abroad were down 3% year-on-year. "This is the calm before the storm," said VDMA Chief Economist Dr. Ralph Wiechers. "The real extent of the consequences of the corona pandemic in the mechanical engineering industry will only become apparent in the order figures for March and the following months. After all, 84% of VDMA members reported serious to noticeable order losses in a survey conducted at the end of March".
