What's left?
The year 2019 is drawing to a close and one asks oneself the question: What will remain from this year's point of view of machine vision? On the one hand, there is the topic of artificial intelligence. If one follows all the hymns of praise for the new (or old) algorithms, one could (almost) get the idea to ask oneself how image processing could ever function without AI. Then there was the heavy camera acquisition wave. Numerous camera manufacturers have been sold or have joined forces to better defy future demands. The current forecasts for the coming year show that this could be due not only to powerful competitors from the Far East, but also to a strong economic slowdown. By the way, this is the last inVISION newsletter for this year. The next issue will be published on 16 January 2020. Until then, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Kind regards
Dr.-Ing. Peter Ebert, Chief Editor inVISION

Ethics and Explainability related to Artificial Intelligence
Since today's artificial intelligence does not develop an awareness of what it learns, AI in principle is completely objective. Therefore the risks of using AI are related to the data and not in the AI itself. The current discussion of AI and ethics aims to prevent artificial intelligence systems from discriminating people.

Basler boost CoaXPress 2.0 Bundle
With the Basler boost Bundle, Basler offers a CXP-12 camera with matching CXP-12 interface card from a single source. This way the integration effort - together with the pylon Camera Software Suite (SDK) - can be significantly reduced, only one SDK is required. The combination with Power-over-CXP (PoCXP) and Trigger enables a cost-saving single cable solution. A number of powerful features, such as the PGI feature set, ensures effective image optimization directly in the camera.

Declining Production in German Mechanical Engineering
In the first ten months of the year, production in the German mechanical engineering sector fell by 1.8% in real terms compared to the year before, while order intake fell by 9% in the same period. For the coming year, the VDMA continues to expect a further decline in production of 2% in real terms. The reason for this is a continuous faltering of the global economy.

25 Years QR Code and a Security Update
The QR code (Quick Response) was developed by Denso in 1994 and received the European Inventor Award in 2014. As the importance of data security has increased significantly, Denso has now developed the Secure QR Code (SQRC). It enables the encryption of sensitive data. Visually, the SQRC is indistinguishable from a conventional QR code. However, it ensures that access to the secured part is only possible with certain readers with the corresponding encryption key. Face recognition can also be combined with the new code.
