Smart farming is one of the areas in which vision technologies is playing an increasingly important role. The market research institute Yole, for example, expects vision sales there to double to over USD 200 million by 2023. Autonomous driving or hyperspectral imaging to determine the condition of plants are just two of the many applications used in vehicles. Agricultural machines have pioneered autonomous driving because they are used in fields that are rather deserted. Rumour has it that car manufacturers initially liked to visit companies like John Deere in order to benefit from their wealth of experience.

3D camera with integrated data processing

New orders in the German mechanical engineering sector fell in July, but the pace of the decline slowed compared with the previous months. Orders fell 3 percent short of the previous year's level in real terms, with domestic orders down 4 percent and orders from abroad down 3 percent.

With almost 100 participants, the 4th European Machine Vision Forum organized by EMVA from 5-6 September in Lyon was a great success. Highlights were the three keynote speeches, many excellent speeches and the discussions during the breaks at the accompanying exhibition. At the end of the event Prof. Peter O'Brien from Tyndall National Institute in Ireland announced the 5th Forum, which will take place from 10-11 September 2020 in Cork, Ireland, with the main topic 'Accuracy, Reliability and Limits of Machine Vision'.
